Showa Denko Introduces UBIC’s “PATENT EXPLORER” Intellectual Property Strategy Support System

TOKYO, Dec. 24, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- UBIC, Inc. (Nasdaq:UBIC) (TSE:2158), a leading provider of international litigation support and big-data analysis services, announced today that Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER was introduced by Showa Denko K.K. in December 2015. Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER is an intellectual property strategy support system that uses UBIC’s proprietary “KIBIT” artificial intelligence (AI) engine.

On October 29, 2015, UBIC launched PATENT EXPLORER, which was commercialized based on the results of a joint development project undergone by UBIC and Toyota Technical Development Corporation. This system significantly improves the efficiency of patent analysis work, including prior art search and invalidity research. Specifically, it increases the efficiency by a factor of around 330 when compared with conventional research techniques. Data concerning the specifics of relevant documents (invention proposals, documents related to patents targeted for invalidation, etc.) is fed into the KIBIT AI engine as “teaching data.” Using a machine learning technique called “landscaping,” the system analyzes a vast volume of data based on a small volume of teaching data and sorts documents by relevancy in a short period of time.

Showa Denko is a major Japanese chemical manufacturer whose product lineup includes petrochemicals, chemicals, electronics products, inorganic materials and aluminum. The company regards intellectual property strategy as critical to its growth and development amid global competition.

Showa Denko quickly decided to introduce PATENT EXPLORER, as it is eager to benefit from the technology’s advanced intellectual property analysis. A trial period has demonstrated PATENT EXPLORER’s higher research efficiency compared with conventional research techniques, such as keyword-based search, similarity search and concept search, as well as its superiority in terms of the accuracy and comprehensiveness of analysis.

Since launching PATENT EXPLORER, UBIC has received numerous inquiries about the product and trial introductions. At the 2015 Patent Information Fair & Conference held on November 2 - 4, UBIC’s booth and presentation drew more visitors than expected and the number of companies which are committing to use the product on a trial basis has steadily increased. In December, one more company decided to introduce PATENT EXPLORER, with more intellectual property and research and development divisions of companies expected to follow suit in the future.
