Konecranes to deliver 12 Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to South Carolina Ports Authority, USA

In July, Konecranes received an order for 12 RTGs from the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The cranes will be delivered to SCPA’s Wando Welch terminal in the Port of Charleston in early fall 2017. When the 12 new RTGs are operational, the SCPA will operate a fleet of 53 Konecranes RTGs.

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) owns and operates public seaport facilities in Charleston, South Carolina and an inland terminal in Greer, South Carolina.

“This makes our 5th RTG order with Konecranes since 1998,” says Stevenson Kemp Jr., Director, Terminal Operations. “We continue to return to Konecranes because their RTGs have proven to be best-in-class in quality of construction, operating characteristics and long-term serviceability. Konecranes also provides excellent technical and maintenance support from their local facilities. We look forward to building on our already strong partnership with Konecranes.”

“Our relationship with the South Carolina Port Authority is of long standing and I’m pleased to see their continued trust in us in the form of this significant order,” says Jussi Suhonen, Sales Director, Port Cranes, Konecranes Region Americas. “We’ll make sure that the SCPA is satisfied with these cranes in every way.”

The RTGs on order will have a lifting capacity of 50 long tons while stacking 1-over-5 containers high and six plus truck lane wide. They will be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control, which eliminates container sway to increase container handling performance, and the Auto-steering and Truck Lift Prevention features. The RTGs will also have built-in readiness for special features including Stack Collision Prevention, and Auto-truck Guiding, which will be taken into use if the cranes are transitioned to semi-automated operation in the future.
