MARIMEKKO INAUGURATES NEW WASHING MACHINE, A MILLION-EURO INVESTMENT, IN ITS TEXTILE PRINTING FACTORY IN FINLAND

Marimekko Corporation, Press release, 6 September 2016 at 9.00 a.m.

Marimekko inaugurates a new washing machine worth around a million euros in its own printing factory in Helsinki today, Tuesday 6 September, at 3.00 p.m. The decision on the investment was made in December 2015, and the new machine was installed during July and August this year. The new machine improves energy efficiency of the process, decreases the use of detergents, and enables using more diverse washing programs than before, for example. Marimekko’s production facility in Helsinki is an only industrial scale textile printing factory in Finland.

”Bold colours and prints form the core of Marimekko’s design philosophy and we believe that being a forerunner in print design goes hand in hand with in-house printing production. Our printing factory has been in its current location since the 1970s, serving both as a factory and as a creative hub where our designers work closely together with our printing experts to create classics of today and the future. Consumers around the world are increasingly interested in knowing where, how and by whom their products have been made. We at Marimekko are proud of our factory which helps us preserve our print heritage and textile printing production in Finland. It is also an international competitive advantage that gives us flexibility and strengthens our ability to innovate. Investing in a new washing machine enables us to develop the operations of our printing factory even further,” says Marimekko’s President and CEO Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko.

All of Marimekko’s fabrics sold by the metre and fabrics used in kitchen textiles as well as part of the fabrics used in its homewares, bags and clothing are printed in the company’s own printing factory in Helsinki. Annually approximately million metres of fabric is printed in Marimekko’s factory in Helsinki.
