Tampnet selects Ericsson for LTE and Virtualized Core Network

  • Ericsson selected to upgrade Tampnet's existing 2G network in the Gulf of Mexico with new GSM and 4G/LTE equipment including microwave backhaul with MINI-LINK
  • Complete network functions virtualization solution deployed as EPC-in-a-box, including Ericsson Virtual Evolved Packet Core and Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment
  • Upgrade will enable Tampnet to offer gulf-wide 4G/LTE coverage to the region's oil and gas industry

NEW YORK, Sept. 20, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tampnet Inc. has selected Ericsson to upgrade the operator's existing 2G network in the Gulf of Mexico. The upgrade will include deployment of 4G/LTE Access, MINI-LINK microwave equipment, and Ericsson's complete network functions virtualization (NFV) solution, including Virtual Evolved Packet Core and Cloud Execution Environment.

With Ericsson's upgrades, Tampnet will offer premium, gulf-wide 4G/LTE coverage to the region's oil and gas industry, its resellers and roaming partners.

Headquartered in Norway, Tampnet is the world's leading telecommunications operator for subsea fiber- and wireless 4G LTE-based data communication for the offshore oil and gas industry.

Per Helge Svensson, CEO, Tampnet Group says: "Tampnet is delighted to be able to work with Ericsson to build one of the most modern LTE networks in the world. Our customer base is one of the most demanding industries in the world, and we are certain that Ericsson's solution will enable us and our customers to develop innovative solutions that will increase effectiveness, productivity, welfare and safety for the platforms, drilling rigs and general workforce offshore. The Ericsson portfolio of equipment enables us to build a robust, future proof, high capacity and low latency communications solution that will serve the users in the region for many years to come."

Ericsson's solution will replace Tampnet's existing equipment and includes Ericsson 4G/LTE Access and Virtual Evolved Packet Core, while also upgrading the microwave backhaul with Ericsson's MINI-LINK. Based on an open architecture, the new NFV based core solution consists of Ericsson Virtual Evolved Packet Core for distributed mobile broadband and OpenStack based Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment.

Rima Qureshi, Head of Region North America, Ericsson, says: "Ericsson is honored to partner with Tampnet to bring broadband wireless services to North America's offshore oil and gas industry. This partnership will enable the deployment of communications and application innovations to the off-shore industry. Ericsson's Virtual Evolved Packet Core together with MINI-LINK microwave portfolio offer Tampnet a highly scalable network, with remote configuration, lower site rental and easy capacity upgrades using software licenses."

Ericsson's LTE solution, combined with the LTE Radio Access Network (RAN), the Virtual Evolved Packet Core and the mobile backhaul, will provide the capacity and flexibility to cope with network evolution challenges. These performance advantages will provide the operator with the same coverage and capacity, despite fewer nodes and less equipment than competitor solutions, reducing the operator's operating and capital expenses.

Tampnet operates offshore telecom infrastructure in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and more than 250 oil and gas installations, mobile rigs and vessels receive high-speed data communication services from the company.

Ericsson is present today in all high traffic LTE markets including the US, Japan, and South Korea, and is ranked first for handling the most global LTE traffic. In addition, 40 percent of the world's total mobile traffic is carried over Ericsson networks. More than 270 LTE RAN and Evolved Packet Core networks have been delivered by Ericsson worldwide, of which 200 are live commercially.
