Broadcom Introduces First Commercial PON OLT Silicon for XGS-PON and NGPON-2 Protocols

BCM68620 SOC provides Fiber Service Providers with a universal central office solution

LONDON, Oct. 17, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Broadband World Forum 2016 - Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ:AVGO), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced the industry's first commercially-available PON OLT devices with support for the recently ratified ITU G.9807.1 XGS-PON and G.989 NGPON-2 protocols. By adding support for these critical new protocols, operators will enjoy the benefits of an open, commercial solution, speeding time to market for symmetric 10Gbps broadband services.

Broadcom's BCM68620 is the first commercially-available OLT silicon for the recently ratified ITU G.9807.1 XGS-PON protocol, and will offer the industry's first support for the ITU G.989 NGPON-2 protocol. Including its additional support for the widely-deployed G.984 2 GPON and IEEE 802.3ah 1G EPON, as well as the IEEE 802.3av 10G EPON protocol, the BCM68620 is the most comprehensive PON OLT development platform on the market today.

Broadcom's multi-mode BCM68620 system-on-a-chip (SoC) integrates support for both existing and next-generation fiber technologies1 under a common application programming interface (API), to enable a unified system software design that can be applied to all PON protocols supported by a system manufacturer. The new support for XGS-PON and NGPON2 fall under this same API umbrella, offering excellent software re-use to existing BCM68620 customers as they easily expand their PON portfolio with line cards dedicated to these new protocols.

“Broadcom heard operators’ need for support of the new XGS-PON and NGPON2 standards in commercial silicon, and OEM requirements for simplified development, and we responded,” said Greg Fischer, senior vice president and general manager, Broadband Carrier Access, Broadcom. “Built on our proven PON OLT technologies, the updated BCM68620 family offers the industry’s only silicon platform with support for all the PON protocols ratified and shipping in volume by operators worldwide.”

“We are encouraged by Broadcom's aggressive investment in next-generation PON technologies," said Dr. Shen Chengbin, senior director, Shanghai Research Institute at China Telecom Corporation Limited. “With early support for the new XGS-PON protocol, Broadcom is providing us with an opportunity to deliver exciting new services to the China market.”

In combination with the new BCM68580 10Gigabit PON ONU solutions, also supporting XGS-PON and NGPON2, Broadcom is now the only vendor with an end-to-end commercial solution for all commercially viable PON technologies.

Key Features of the BCM68620 SoC

  • First commercially-available PON OLT solution for the new XGS-PON and NGPON2 protocols
  • Broadcom-designed, high-performance PON and 10G-PON burst-mode SerDes
