Advances in ALD Technology Boosting Commercial Applications, Reports BCC Research

Wellesley, Mass, Jan. 18, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Wellesley, Mass., Jan 18, 2017 – In the past 10 years, the global market for atomic layer deposition (ALD) materials and equipment has evolved due to technological developments that have spurred industry changes. BCC Research reveals in its new report that the market has realized a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 15% as the use of ALD for producing ultrathin films increases and new fields of application emerge.

The global market for atomic layer deposition and other ultrathin film fabrication processes is expected to increase from $1.5 billion in 2016 to nearly $3.7 billion in 2021, demonstrating a five-year CAGR of 19.1%. Atomic layer deposition process market is expected to reach $694 million and almost $2.0 billion in 2016 and 2021, respectively, growing at a five-year CAGR of 23.3%. Liquid phase methods process market is expected to grow from $473 million in 2016 to nearly $1.1 billion at a five-year CAGR of 17.6%.

ALD equipment currently accounts for the largest share of the market at 45.4% of the total in 2016, corresponding to $694 million in sales. ALD equipment is primarily used for fabrication of semiconductor devices, and in minor part for optoelectronics and energy devices.

Liquid phase methods (e.g., chemical solution deposition) also account for a significant share of the market with estimated revenues of $473 million in 2016 (or 31.0% of the total), while the remaining processes (e.g., pulsed layer deposition, molecular beam epitaxy and others) represent a 23.6% share of the total, all together.

Demand for ultrathin film deposition equipment (UTFE) is projected to increase significantly during the next five years. Key growth factors include the sustained need for ultrathin film equipment for fabrication of new-generations of semiconductor devices, growing penetration in sectors such as optoelectronics, energy, life sciences, and sensors and instrumentation, and the introduction of more efficient and cost-effective production technologies that facilitate economy of scale.

"Another driver of the UTFE segment is the high level of related R&D activities," says BCC Research analyst Margareth Gagliardi. "Overall, the total UTFE market is forecast to grow at a 19.1% compound annual growth rate from 2016 to 2021, totaling global revenues of almost $3.7 billion by 2021."

Atomic Layer Deposition and other Ultrathin-Film Fabrication Processes (SMC061C) analyzes the existing and emerging fields of applications for atomic layer deposition. The report also examines the UTFE market based on the following segments: process, application and region. Additionally, technological issues, including key events and the latest process developments, are discussed. Global market drivers and trends, with data from 2015, estimates for 2016, and projections of CAGRs through 2021 also are provided.
