DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell Can Now Accept Kentucky’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Now in its 6th year, the DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell will feature more vendors, greater selection, extended hours and for the first time ever, acceptance of Kentucky’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, July 21, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In celebration of being accepted as an approved vendor for the Kentucky’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and as the recipient of the LiveWell NKY 2017 community grant, the Market has launched a new branding and promotional initiative designed to increase both visitors and consumption of fruits and vegetables.   LiveWell NKY commissioned FUSIONWRX, Northern Kentucky marketing and design firm, to raise community awareness of the farmers market by instituting a strategic brand initiative, including a new logo and community-wide signage program, as well as media and community outreach. FUSIONWRX has been a LiveWell community partner since the program’s inception, providing volunteer staff engagement and partial pro-bono marketing support.

For the second straight year, the DCCH Center for Children and Families at 75 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky is hosting the Fort Mitchell Farmers Market.  The DCCH Farmers Market is open rain or shine every Saturday through the end of October from 10 am – 2 pm.  The city of Fort Mitchell hosts a preview of the Farmers Market on the 1st Wednesday of each Month, now through October during the hours of 4 pm – 7pm.  The “pop-up market” is located at the Fort Mitchell City Building, 2355 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

This year, Kentucky’s SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) will be offered as a payment option for market purchases.  Working with the SNAP program, the DCCH Farmers Market will be able to help people and households with limited income buy farm fresh food for healthy meals.  According to a study by the Farmers Market Coalition, produce purchased at farmers markets is up to 22% less expensive than supermarket produce.  Additional benefits available to all Market shoppers include produce that is picked at the peak of ripeness, adding to taste, nutrition and seasonal variety. According to Amy Powell, owner of Atwood Village Family Farm and one of the founding members of the market, “We seek to enhance the DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell each year with a commitment to offer more healthy food options to our customers.  This year, we are excited to offer the opportunity to purchase with SNAP, which we hope will encourage everyone in our community to shop the DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell.”

The Farmers Market’s new branding initiative is supported by a grant from Northern Kentucky’s LiveWell NKY program which drives a vision for a culture of good health in Northern Kentucky.  LiveWell’s mission includes changing policy and environment to “make the healthy choice the easy choice”.

The foundation of LiveWell NKY is the community coalition – groups of committed community volunteers working to improve healthy behaviors in their community.  Ft. Mitchell’s coalition has already been successful in creating a community garden and establishing smoke-free parks.   “We are now excited to support the Fort Mitchell community with promotion of this year’s Farmers Market through support of LiveWell NKY and the dedicated commitment of our LiveWell Ft. Mitchell community volunteers.   We encourage all Fort Mitchell residents to visit the Market,” stated Stephanie Bogenschutz, St. Elizabeth Healthcare manager and chair of the Ft. Mitchell coalition.

The DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell is a family-friendly market with a farm-to-table focus.  For 2017, the Market will present a larger selection of goods produced within the Fort Mitchell area, including fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, honey, jams, handcrafted soaps, perennials, handcrafted items and much more.  All items sold at the market hold the distinction of Kentucky Proud. This year’s market will periodically feature local entertainment and art, live music, and cooking-related learning opportunities.  Follow the DCCH Farmers Market of Fort Mitchell on Facebook to stay abreast of each Saturday’s entertainment and featured vendors.
