Whitsons becomes a U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champion

Islandia, New York, Aug. 23, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Whitsons Culinary Group, a provider of food services to private and public schools, corporate dining, and healthcare throughout the Northeast, has been accepted as a member of the U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champions.  The staggering amount of wasted food in the United States has far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation, and climate change. To help galvanize U.S. efforts to reduce food loss and waste, USDA and EPA announced the first U.S. food loss and waste reduction goal in September 2015. Whitsons has stepped up to do their part to help the nation reach this critical goal by pledging concrete steps to reduce food loss and waste in their operations 50 percent by the year 2030.

“We are committed to doing our part when it comes to food loss and waste reduction. By keeping wholesome and nutritious food in our communities and out of our landfills, we can help address far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation, and climate change,” said Paul Whitcomb, President and CEO Whitsons Culinary Group. “This is all part of our Simply Rooted™ food philosophy and sustainability platform which is based on delivering wholesome, all-natural and affordable meals to everyone’s table, while giving back to the environment.”

As a U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champion, Whitsons will strive to reduce food loss and waste in its operations by 50 percent by 2030 through activities targeting the prevention of food loss and waste before it arises, recovery of wholesome otherwise wasted food for donation, and recycling of food loss and waste to other uses such as animal feed, compost, and energy generation.

“We are proud to announce that Whitsons has been accepted as a Food Loss and Waste Champion! This is the first waste program we have embarked on and we are excited to be stepping up to do our part to help the nation reach this critical goal,” said Kelly Friend, Chief Operating Officer for Whitsons. “Our team is making great efforts to prepare and formalize this program. We have been working to develop standard operating procedures, audit implementation schedules, training documents, and messaging in coordination with the USDA and EPA.”
