Inphi Expands 16nm Polaris™ PAM4 DSP Product Family with Integrated EML and VCSEL Driver

4th Generation Market Leading PAM4 Solutions Address Power and Cost for 50/100/200/400GbE Short Reach Optical Interconnects to be Demonstrated at ECOC

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Sept. 18, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Inphi Corporation (NYSE:IPHI), a leader in high-speed data movement interconnects, today announced it has expanded its 16nm Polaris™ PAM4 DSP portfolio for next generation 50G-400G cloud deployments. The new Polaris PAM4 DSP now includes products supporting an integrated driver to address the growing demands for lower power and reduced cost solutions over short reach data center optical connectivity. The company will be showcasing the platform with integrated drivers and low-power TIA’s in a live demo at its booth #337 at European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), in Gothenburg, Sweden, September 18-20.

The foundation of the 16nm CMOS PAM4 platform is a highly configurable DSP engine that is based on four generations of proven silicon and is designed to achieve performance levels for both multi-mode and single mode optical interconnects, while keeping an extremely low power profile of optical module applications. By integrating the driver functionality, Inphi has developed a solution truly optimized for low-cost 200G and 400G data center deployments.

“As a pioneer of PAM4 technology, Inphi continues to build on its market leading PAM4 solutions by driving down power and cost per bit with platform solutions enabling higher levels of integration for data center cloud deployments,” said Siddharth Sheth, SVP, Networking Interconnect, Inphi.

“Cloud operators are looking for every possible edge to reduce the cost of short reach optical connectivity. Inphi and its Polaris platform play a critical role in cutting the cost of 100G and making 400G an economically viable technology,” said Andrew Schmitt, founder and lead analyst at Cignal AI.

The Polaris 16nm PAM4 product family will support both integrated and non-integrated driver capabilities spanning short reach optical applications, and longer distances of fiber enabled by the use of an external driver.

Polaris 16nm PAM4 DSP PHY with Integrated Driver features:

  • InphiNity™ DSP Engine with a unique mixed-mode DSP architecture for high-performance, low power applications needing adaptability and configurability
  • Numerous self-test and loopback modes that allow diagnostic monitoring of channel and system parameters
  • Eye-scan, samplers and monitors on all receiver interfaces for link margin and stress testing along with GUI and API routines for data and error analytics
  • Low power 16nm CMOS
  • Currently sampling to lead customers

Inphi’s 16nm PAM4 DSP PHY ICs provide a full bi-directional interface with host ASICs that have 28GBaud PAM4 and NRZ electrical interfaces while bridging to 28GBaud PAM4 optics. The product family can support PAM4 or NRZ signaling, and both Retiming and Gearbox functionality with packaging specifically designed for the following optics modules:

  • Polaris-400G - 8x56Gbps PAM4 <-> 16x28Gbps NRZ gearbox for CFP8
  • Polaris-400G (NG) - 8x56Gbps <-> 8x56Gbps PAM4 retiming for OSFP / QSFP-DD
  • Polaris-200G - 4x56Gbps <-> 4x56Gbps PAM4 retiming for QSFP56
  • Polaris-100G - 2x56Gbps <-> 2x56Gbps PAM4 retiming for QSFP28
  • Polaris-50G - 1x56Gbps <-> 1x56Gbps PAM4 retiming for SFP56
