FCT Charitable Foundation Announces Third Annual Scholarship Recipients

The Honourable William G. Davis Scholarships have been awarded to five deserving Canadian students

Oakville, ON, Sept. 26, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The FCT Charitable Foundation (FCTCF) has announced the five student recipients of The Honourable William G. Davis Scholarship for 2017. Each of the students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to their post-secondary education.

“FCT and the FCTCF would like to thank all of the students who applied and the selection committee members who dedicated their time to this process. The FCTCF and the employees of FCT are proud to offer scholarships to these deserving students, and hope that we can play a small role in their continued success,” said Michael LeBlanc, chair, FCTCF and chief executive officer, FCT. “This year’s recipients have been called committed, passionate and dedicated leaders in their communities where they have spent countless hours volunteering and giving back, while maintaining impressive grades at their respective secondary and post-secondary schools.”

The 2017 William G. Davis Scholarship recipients are:

  • Abigail Morris – Attending Carleton University, Ontario
  • Abir Gebara – Attending Ryerson University, Ontario
  • Celine Copeland – Attending Mount Royal University, Alberta
  • Jamie Magrill – Attending the University of British Columbia, British Columbia
  • Jessica Karjanmaa – Attending York University (Osgoode Hall Law School), Ontario

There are 10 previous recipients of The Honourable William G. Davis Scholarship. Several past recipients have shared how the scholarship impacted their lives.

“As an orphaned disabled young girl, finishing my studies seemed almost impossible. Thanks in part to the FCTCF scholarship, I have graduated with a 4.0 and I’m this year's Valedictorian! I'm forever grateful.” – Muluba Habanyama, 2015 recipient

“The generous contributions of the FCTCF helped eliminate a significant barrier to my success - that being of course, the money. With the scholarship funds, I could focus on my studies instead of worrying about where my tuition was coming from. For the first time ever, I felt that I could devote all of my energy to the program and truly shine.” – Carly Stanhope, 2015 recipient

About the Honourable William G. Davis Scholarship Program

The scholarship program is named after The Honourable William G. Davis, the 18th Premier of Ontario, whose passion for education contributed to his work in building Ontario’s community college system. For the past decade, Mr. Davis has served as the Chair of FCT’s board of directors. He also served on the board of directors for FCT’s parent company, First American, from 1997-2013.

Students completed an application, which included their community and volunteer involvement, extra-curricular activities, and an essay explaining to the selection committee why they felt they deserved the scholarship. Each application was then reviewed by a panel who advised the FCTCF of their selections in August 2017. In order to qualify for the scholarships, each recipient must have been accepted to or currently enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
