CNL Named One of Canada’s ‘Top 100 Employers’

For second consecutive year, Canada’s national nuclear laboratory honoured for its strong human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies

CHALK RIVER, Ontario, Nov. 09, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, announced today that it has once again been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, the second consecutive year the company has received the national award. Now in its 19th year, the annual competition run by Mediacorp recognizes Canadian employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies.

With over 2,800 employees working in laboratory and project sites across the country, CNL is committed to a positive work environment that offers its staff the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. As Canada’s national nuclear laboratory, the company also employs a broad range of professionals in a variety of fields, from nuclear scientists and engineers to business professionals and tradespeople.

“CNL is a company that is truly passionate about innovation, and we try to extend that spirit to the treatment of our employees, whether it’s in career development and training, the work environment, or simply our compensation and benefits,” commented Esther Zdolec, CNL’s Vice-President of Human Resources. “CNL has just introduced an exciting and globally relevant program in nuclear science and technology, and we are building a great team to achieve this vision. Our HR Strategy and Plan is helping us navigate these changes for employees, and help them – and us – plan for the future. We want to build a vibrant community of the world’s best and brightest in nuclear; this awards confirms that we’re headed in the right direction.”

The 2018 competition saw a record number of employers take part in the selection process, with an increased number of applicants from all regions of the country. Mediacorp editors started by examining the recruitment histories of over 90,000 employers. From this pool, Mediacorp invited approximately 7,500 employers to submit detailed applications, including a comprehensive review of their operations and HR practices that compares them to others in their industry and region.

Editors at Mediacorp grade employers on eight criteria, which have remained consistent since the project's inception: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time-Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. The editors publish detailed reasons for selection and grades for these criteria, providing transparency in the selection of winners and a ‘catalogue of best-practices’ for employers and job-seekers alike.

“This award comes at a great time for CNL, as we’re entering a period of significant growth; our research staffing alone is projected to increase by more than 20 per cent in the coming years,” explains Zdolec. “We’re actively looking to augment our high-calibre research team, build strength in new capability areas, and replace those planning to retire. CNL is an exceptional employer for people interested in pursuing a career in cutting-edge science and technology. This award is recognition of that, and should encourage people to think of CNL for the next step in their career.”

CNL recently announced plans to hire nearly two hundred additional research staff over the next three years to accommodate the company’s anticipated growth in nuclear science and technology services. Overall, the combination of increased research staffing, organizational changes, and voluntary departures and attrition is expected to result in over 800 vacancies that CNL will need to fill over the next three years.
