ProStart High School Students Get Jump on Nation’s First Hospitality Apprenticeship Program

ProStart students who complete Certificate of Achievement are automatically eligible to become hospitality apprentices

Washington, DC, Nov. 16, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As part of the administration’s efforts to expand apprenticeship to high school, ProStart culinary and restaurant management students can now earn credentials to enter the Hospitality Sector Registered Apprenticeship (HSRA) program for restaurant managers.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and its programs work to train and advance the next generation of restaurant leaders, including those at the high school level and those currently working in the industry. The Foundation’s ProStart program is a nationwide high school career and technical education program uniting the classroom and restaurant industry to develop tomorrow’s restaurant and foodservice leaders. To provide career pathways for both new and incumbent workers in hospitality, the NRAEF and the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) have developed the nation’s first earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship program for restaurant, foodservice and lodging.

“The connection between ProStart and the nation’s first hospitality apprenticeship initiative provides young people with another critical pathway to not only enter the restaurant industry, but to advance them toward rewarding careers,” says Rob Gifford, Executive Vice President of the NRAEF. “We’re excited to offer the next generation of industry leaders the support they need to make their career dreams a reality.”

Students who wish to earn credits for the hospitality apprenticeship must complete the ProStart Certificate of Achievement, which includes passing two national exams, completing 400 hours of practical work experience in the industry and demonstrating proficiency in at least 70 percent of the 75 industry competencies taught in the program. ProStart is one of the only career and technical education programs where a high school level student can work in the industry while still in school.
