Church of Scientology Sponsored United for Human Rights of Florida Stops Human Trafficking through Education

CLEARWATER, Fla., Jan. 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With Florida ranking third in the nation for human trafficking, United for Human Rights of Florida is hosting a seminar on spotting the signs of human trafficking so the community can do something about it. The seminar is being held on Wednesday, January 24th at 7pm. There is no cost to attend and refreshments will be served.

“There are many myths out there about human trafficking,” said Emma Ashton, the Executive Director for United for Human Rights, Florida. “It isn’t just someone being smuggled into the country – of those calling into the National Human Trafficking Hotline, more than half of the victims are American citizens.”

“Community members who know the signs of human trafficking are one of the most effective methods of combating this vile practice,” added Ms. Ashton. “There are signs if you know what to look for.”

Beyond knowing the signs of human trafficking is also knowledge of human rights themselves, added Ms. Ashton.

United for Human Rights of Florida is the largest non-governmental educational program on human rights. Utilizing the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a basis for a booklet, public service announcements and the award-winning “The Story of Human Rights” documentary, UHR has educated tens of millions in 195 countries about their basic human rights.

“United for Human Rights is about educating the people,” said the founder of Youth on the Move Education International. “Because if you’re not exposed to what the rights are and what it is to be treated without certain rights, then you’re helpless. You feel helpless. You don’t call for help. You don’t speak up. But when they see [The Story of Human Rights], people start thinking maybe there is something I can do.”

The center is located at 29 N. Fort Harrison Ave in Clearwater. Seating is limited. If you would like to reserve a seat, or get more information about the event, please call 727-467-6960.

ABOUT UNITED FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Early in his research into the human mind and spirit, author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard emphasized that spiritual freedom and enlightenment were all but unattainable goals to individuals denied their most fundamental human rights.

Accordingly, he wrote the Code of a Scientologist, calling on all members of the religion to dedicate themselves “to support true humanitarian endeavors in the fields of human rights.” Today, Scientologists on five continents engage in collaborative efforts with government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to bring about broad-scale awareness and implementation of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s premier human rights document.
