Google’s Renowned “Security Princess” and Director of Project Zero, Parisa Tabriz, to Keynote Black Hat USA 2018

Tabriz will share the challenges and triumphs of improving security for the world

SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Black Hat, the world’s leading producer of information security events, announces that Parisa Tabriz, Google’s Director of Engineering, also known as the company’s “Security Princess,” will Keynote Black Hat USA 2018. In addition to more than a decade of work in securing Google platforms, Tabriz has served as a consultant to the White House U.S. Digital Service and has dedicated time to educating youth on hacker practices and painting an accurate depiction of the security realm for entertainment writers and producers. Her Keynote will explore how to make objective security improvements in complex ecosystems and provide an immediate call to action for safer and more reliable technology for humanity.

Black Hat USA will take place August 4-9, 2018 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. For more information and to register, please visit: blackhat.com/us-18/

As Director of Engineering at Google, Tabriz is responsible for Chrome security and Project Zero, a security research team tasked with reducing harm associated with zero-day vulnerabilities. Her work in information security at Google started more than a decade ago, where she took on a role as a "hired hacker" software engineer for its central security team.

Outside of her work with Google, Parisa has served the InfoSec community through various other avenues. She previously acted as a consultant to the White House U.S. Digital Service to enhance security of government technology, lectured at the Harvard Kennedy School and taught hacking basics to girl scouts and r00tz (DEFCON for kids) attendees. Parisa has also offered her wealth of knowledge to entertainment writers, to help them understand the world of cybersecurity and technology in order to create and depict more accurate, diverse stories. Her strides within the community have been widely recognized - in 2017, she was featured on WIRED’s Next List for her work pushing encryption on the web, and in 2012, was selected by Forbes as one of the 30 under 30 pioneers in technology.

“Optimistic Dissatisfaction with the Status Quo: Steps we Must Take to Improve Security in Complex Landscapes”

Tabriz’s presentation acknowledges the critical role that today’s InfoSec community is playing in securing our interconnected technical systems. She will draw attention to the complex and vast technology landscape while proving that security progress at scale happens through the tactics and tireless efforts of many over a long period of time.

Tabriz will go on to detail the key items that can make objective security improvements in complex ecosystems possible: principled pragmatism, openness, and an optimistic dissatisfaction with the status quo. She’ll share how each of these were critical in three independent, ongoing efforts she’s driving to improve security at scale.  In conclusion, a specific call to action will be made to address the challenges presented and move the community a step further towards improving security for the world.
