Attendees of the Financial Planning Association's NorCal Conference Contribute Over $300,000 to Pro Bono Financial Planning for Families Affected by Cancer

Washington, D.C., June 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Attendees of the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®)’s NorCal Conference, organized by a committee of financial planning professionals representing the FPA Chapters of San Francisco, Easy Bay, Silicon Valley and California North Bay, raised $320,000 last month in support of the Foundation for Financial Planning (FFP), which delivers pro bono financial planning to people in critical need.

Over the last 10 years, the FPA NorCal Conference has been a huge source of support for FFP, with over $1.3 million contributed through the event since 2008. This year, FFP appealed to attendees for support of its Pro Bono for Cancer Campaign, which is funding the development and growth of pro bono financial planning programs for families affected by a serious cancer diagnosis. The campaign recently supported the launch of pilot programs in Boston and Seattle, where FFP and its partners are recruiting Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) professionals to help cancer patients and their families plan for anticipated expenses, loss of income and more.

Money raised through the campaign is also funding specialized volunteer training, as well as research and evaluation activities that will measure the impact of pro bono financial planning on the lives and financial health of participating families, allowing FFP and its partners to finetune the program as it expands to other cities and cancer centers over time.

“I think it’s important for anyone facing a serious health crisis to have access to quality financial advice,” said Ken Coit, the campaign’s largest individual donor. “This effort will provide patients with expert financial guidance at no cost, allowing them to fully focus on their treatment and getting well.”

With a contribution of $100,000 to the Pro Bono for Cancer Campaign, Coit adds to his generous support of FFP over time, now recognized for a total of $600,000 in contributions to the Foundation’s pro bono efforts.

“FFP could not achieve what it has without the deep commitment of this group of volunteers and donors,” said Kacy Gott, CFP®, Chairman of FFP’s Board of Trustees. “Financial planners in the Northern California region are among our most generous – giving both their time and money – and we have been thrilled to see our Pro Bono for Cancer work benefit from their continued passion and support.”

Eric Flett, a key organizer of the annual NorCal event, adds that FFP is able to reach those who he and other financial planners can’t always serve in their regular practices: “The Foundation has the mission, expertise, and network to serve thousands of families each year – families in critical need of good, objective financial advice. I’m proud that FPA NorCal can be a platform for giving back to those who need this type of help.”

To date, the Pro Bono for Cancer Campaign has raised over $1.5 million to help support pro bono financial planning for cancer patients and their families. To learn more and make a gift, visit ProBono4Cancer.org.
