“Despite a little less than half of the population is illiterate and 50 percent without electricity, African continent has one billion active phone connections and 43 percent have access to 3G network. This shows modern technology is transforming lives and African women have already started their journey of economic empowerment.” This was stated by Almas Jiwani, Founder and CEO of Almas Jiwani Foundation (AJF) and the President Emeritus of UN Women Canada, as a featured speaker at the 2018 Africa Trade & Investment Global Summit (ATIGS) being held from June 24 to 26, 2018 at the World Trade Center in Washington, D.C. with the theme of “Driving Trade, Unleashing Investment and Enhancing Economic Development: the Gateway to African Markets.”

ATIGS is a biennial business conference and exhibition intended for the promotion and facilitation of the Americas, Asia, Caribbean, Europe, and the UAE to have international trade with Africa. The purpose is to facilitate the foreign direct investment in Africa and give a platform for the expansion into new markets by businesses.

“We are excited and honored to welcome Ms. Almas Jiwani, as a featured speaker at the Africa Trade & to share her wealth of knowledge and experience with our prestigious audience,” Yawo Amega, ATIGS Senior Member of the Organizing Committee & Global Representative, stated.

Amega further added, “Fiercely vocal and internationally renowned champion for gender equality and women’s social, economic, and political empowerment, Ms. Jiwani’s ability to influence and motivate individuals to action for corporate growth in relation to humanitarian development is unparalleled. Ms. Jiwani will address ATIGS audience, raise awareness on gender inequality, and inspire us to become involved in economically empowering women.”

Jiwani further said, “The international economic, political, and social empowerment of African peoples through the further increase in global trade and international market integration oriented around Africa remains incredibly poignant, timely, and important in the early 21st century. With the Almas Jiwani Foundation’s emphasis on the empowerment of women, in the broadest sense, ATIGS 2018 helps further spark more global trade, international market integration, and so the empowerment of women in Africa, too. Without women’s involvement in the society as equals, African societies miss half of their potential and stand to lose in trade globally.”
