Hotel near University of Maryland gains recognition for community programs


HYATTSVILLE, Md., Sept. 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Earning a special event award for its most recent efforts in community service, College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center is finding more ways to give back to the community that’s helped it thrive for years. Through supporting Maryland’s employment efforts in education and training initiatives, the hotel strives to strengthen the community and give back in a way that’s meaningful and long-lasting.

The hotel supports many programs offering educational experiences and life skills training for youth, including those who are interested in careers in hospitality. The hotel offers training, mentorships and internships through the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HWSC) program, the National Children’s Center and Prince George’s County Public High Schools.

The programs are designed to support and help young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, so that they can develop job readiness skills. The hotel in College Park partners with local culinary schools to put people who are passionate about cooking into the kitchens of working restaurants. The hotel’s managers assist with classroom training and provide mentorships and career advice for the students and partners with community culinary training and work readiness programs for young adults in Prince George’s County and DC.

The partnership between the hotel and Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection has formed the basis for an internship program employing ten HW-SC students that attend local Prince George’s County Public High Schools. The hotel near University of Maryland provides part-time paid job opportunities, 15-20 hours a week. It offers the participating students both employment and career exploration experiences, exposing them to career opportunities.

Of the hotel’s initial ten students, one of them has graduated and is attending a college that is out of the area and two of them are attending local colleges and were hired on as part-time employees.
