New Digital Series, The Next Great Package, Challenges Designers to Rethink the Classic Six-Sided Box to Help Solve Everyday Problems

Paper and Packaging – How Life Unfolds® Campaign Taps Six New York City Designers for
Out-of-This-World Packaging Design

MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Imagine if some of life’s everyday challenges could be solved by creative, new innovations made out of cardboard packaging. The Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® campaign today unveils its first ever Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® “The Next Great Package” challenge to put this idea to the test. The Next Great Package is a three-part video series that documents the journey of some of the country’s smartest engineers and designers as they compete head to head to develop solutions to three very different problems using paper and cardboard as the foundation for their creations.

The video series is hosted by design and technology commentator, Adesina Sanchez. Each episode tackles an important theme and partners with a leading industry brand, including Zappos, Yotel and Moe’s Southwest Grill. Participants were challenged to flex their innovative muscles to develop practical, yet forward-thinking packaging solutions to enhance consumer experiences.

Each submission was judged by company representatives considering the assignment, brand solution, design elements and wow factor. Designs had to be inspiring, innovative and secure using paper’s unique properties to solve the business challenge. Whether packaging is delivering goods safely or breathing new life into everyday experiences, each episode celebrates the versatility of paper-based packaging solutions.

  • Design For Purpose with Zappos
People with disabilities often struggle with everyday tasks that most take for granted. Online shoe and clothing retailer, Zappos, teamed up with Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® for the “Design For Purpose” category to design an easy-to-open shoe box to align with the company’s existing adaptive fashion products for those with special needs. The two competitors include mixed media designer, Alex Moncada, and structural packaging and graphic designer, Asia Davidson.

  • Design For Food with Moe’s Southwest Grill
To address the issue of food waste and deliver quality family dining experiences, our two designers were tasked with improving ineffective takeout packaging, using paper materials to deliver food fresh and minimize waste. Fast casual restaurant chain, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® asked designers to create paper-based food packaging that helps eliminate waste and gives consumers peace of mind that their food will arrive home intact. The two competitors include product and packaging designer, Marti Zabell, and senior cosmetics consultant, Christina Ghiloni.

  • Design For Tech with Yotel
Urban hotels are often short on space, so having items fit multiple needs is key. No one understands that more than the Yotel hotel group, with hotels in New York, San Francisco, Boston, London, Singapore, Paris and Amsterdam. Yotel and Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® asked two competitors to create a high-tech tissue box to fulfill multiple needs for hotel guests. Designers could add electrical or mechanical components, like a smartphone charging station, to demonstrate how tech and analog can coexist to maximize function while celebrating form. The two competitors include industrial engineer, Isis Shiffer, and industrial designer, McKay Nilson.

“We are always looking to celebrate unique, innovative paper-based solutions to packaging challenges, so we couldn’t be more excited about this fresh approach,” said Mary Anne Hansan, president of the Paper and Packaging Board. “We hope that The Next Great Package series will encourage others to use paper packaging to inspire creativity and innovation in their everyday lives.”
