Research Management Has Crucial Role to Play in Investors’ Results, Fulfilment of Fiduciary Duty

ATLANTA, Nov. 28, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Institutional investor and consultant research teams are frequently the unsung heroes of the institutional investment world. Those teams with systematic and repeatable research processes have a real impact on institutional investors’ and consultants’ returns, compliance efforts and fulfilment of their fiduciary duties. On the other hand, teams without a scalable, repeatable approach can open their funds or consulting firms to a wide range of problems, from poor returns to challenging regulatory reviews.

“As data becomes more and more important in reviewing, recommending and hiring asset managers with both investors and consultants, a solid research management process is crucial to doing that vetting, making those decisions and then backing them up when required to do so by regulators, board members and other stakeholders in the process,” said Chris Tinsley, head of eVestment’s Research Management solution.

“Scalable teams understand and value consistency and repeatability,” he continued. “And there are a few key tips for research teams looking to build out the best, most scalable research process.”

Those tips are:

  • Thoroughly document key decisions such that they can easily be validated by others.
  • Maintain template agendas and standard questionnaires for specific events and interactions with managers (i.e. new product introduction, key person departure, substantial portfolio changes).
  • Focus efforts on synthesizing insight rather than collecting commodity information.

Tinsley will be joined by investment industry research expert Mark Thurston in a webinar on Thursday, November 29 from 11 a.m. to noon (EST) to explore this topic in more detail.

Thurston is founder of AlphaSignal, an institutional investment industry consultant. Prior to founding AlphaSignal, Thurston worked at Russell Investments for almost 25 years. During that time, Thurston intensively researched and ranked hundreds of investment managers and played a key role in evolving Russell Investments’ research process.
