PARAMUS, NJ--(Marketwire - Oct 18, 2012) - As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches, New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Luis Zapiach and his staff have announced their participation in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk being held in Ridgefield Park, NJ on October 21st, 2012. Hosted by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the walk is one of several annual events dedicated to educating the public about breast cancer while raising money to help discover a cure and advance procedural techniques. As a large proponent of the ACS and its fundraising efforts, Dr. Zapiach is a loyal sponsor of the Making Strides walk and says his practice has contributed to the cause in a number of ways:
"Given our role in the treatment of breast cancer, we raise awareness for breast cancer at Art Plastic Surgery in our daily discussions with patients regardless of the indication of their visit. As a Local Partner Sponsor for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, we actively involve the community by encouraging our patients, friends, colleagues, and neighbors to participate in the event and raise funds at the same time. Thus far, we have raised nearly $11,000 and hope to add significantly more to this figure by the end of the walk."
According to the ACS, women have nearly a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer during their lifetime; however, survival rates have steadily been on the rise due to earlier detection and more effective treatments. Dr. Zapiach feels funds raised from events like the Making Strides walk have contributed to the increase in survival rates by helping to advance research for breast cancer treatments and procedures. He says donations play a vital role in combating the cancer from the diagnostic stage, all the way to a potential need for cosmetic breast reconstruction.
In regards to why breast cancer awareness is important to him, Dr. Zapiach says, "As breast cancer affects one in eight women, we all have a reason to raise awareness. Thankfully, the overall breast cancer death rate has dropped over the past 10 years. However, breast cancer is still by far the most commonly diagnosed, non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American women. Contributions to the American Cancer Society have, in part, funded major research breakthroughs that have allowed this to happen - such as Herceptin and Tamoxifen. Raising awareness and, ultimately, continuing to fund important research is life saving."
He adds that he looks forward to participating in the walk, and he hopes the efforts of his New Jersey plastic surgery practice will make a great difference in the lives of all those affected by breast cancer.
