Boston Ophthalmologist Offers Blepharoplasty for Functional and Cosmetic Purposes

Dr. Helen Moreira Performs Eyelid Lift Surgery for Patients Seeking a More Youthful-Looking Appearance, as Well as for Those With Medical Concerns Regarding Vision Obstruction

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - May 27, 2014) - In addition to refractive cataract and LASIK procedures, Dr. Helen R. Moreira, an ophthalmologist in Boston, performs a variety of surgeries at The Nielsen Eye Center to address cosmetic and functional concerns regarding the eyes. One procedure in particular has the capability of addressing both aesthetics and medical needs: the eyelid lift. Also known as blepharoplasty, Dr. Moreira explains that eyelid surgery has the potential to rejuvenate a patient's facial appearance, as well as improve one's vision if excess skin droops too low, obstructing the line of sight.

In her recent blog post, "Are You a Good Candidate for Eyelid Lift Surgery?," Dr. Moreira addresses what makes someone an ideal eyelid lift patient. She explains if a person has noticed their upper or lower eyelid skin starting to sag over time, or if these areas appear loose or puffy, they may find an eyelid lift can significantly improve their concerns. While many people are motivated by the surgery's rejuvenative benefits, Dr. Moreira notes in her recent blog post, "When Eyelid Surgery Becomes Medically Necessary," that sagging eyelid skin can also affect one's vision, making surgery the best option for restoring their sight. Despite the patient's desire for eyelid surgery, Dr. Moreira stresses the importance of having good overall health and realistic expectations about potential results.

Once the patient has been determined a qualified candidate for blepharoplasty, Dr. Moreira is able to move forward with the procedure. During the operation, she removes excess skin and fat along the upper or lower lids, depending on the patient's unique concerns. The Boston eye surgeon says correcting each eye takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Following eyelid surgery, she advises patients to expect some initial swelling and bruising; however, she notes that these symptoms typically improve within the next few weeks.

Ultimately, Dr. Moreira stresses that anyone wishing to undergo the eyelid lift surgery should do their research to find a qualified surgeon, and then schedule a consultation to learn whether or not the procedure is right for their unique needs.
