NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - January 21, 2016) - Chris DeRose, founder and president of international animal advocacy group Last Chance for Animals, will speak Friday, January 22 at an NY City Council hearing on a newly amended version of Intro 573, a proposed bill regarding horse-drawn carriages in New York City. DeRose will also participate in a rally after the hearing to speak out against the cruelty of the NYC carriage industry.
The proposed version of Intro 573 would:
- Reduce the number of NYC horse licenses from approximately 180 to 95
- Move all stables from their current location in Hell's Kitchen to Central Park
- Remove horse-drawn carriages from the streets, only allowing them to operate in Central Park
DeRose will abstain from the legislation because it fails to fully ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC, as the original version of Intro 573 did.
"If the New York City Council passes this new, watered-down version of Intro 573, they will be allowing some cruelty to horses, which is not acceptable to me or to my organization, Last Chance for Animals," said DeRose. "I am sure we will be revisiting this issue one day in the near future when a New York resident or tourist has been injured -- or worse -- by this archaic practice."

In 2015, Last Chance for Animals released an investigation into the NYC horse-drawn carriage industry revealing severe cruelty including horses exposed to the dangers of city streets, deprived of food or water, tethered so tightly they could not lie down in their stalls at night, and forced to pull carriages while obviously injured.
