STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 14, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska's U.S. subsidiary, Slattery Skanska, has been contracted to design and construct an extension of the Metrorail subway system in Washington, D.C. Slattery Skanska has 30 percent, or USD 65.4 M, about SEK 683 M, of the total order value of USD 218 M, approximately SEK 2.3 billion. The customer is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The new contract will be included in the order bookings for the first quarter 2002.

The contract is for a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) extension of the Blue Line Metrorail from the existing Addison Road Station to Largo Town Center in Prince George's County, Maryland, east of Washington, D.C.

The double-track line will feature construction of a double box cut-and- cover tunnel through wooded areas and several street crossings. The scope of work also includes construction of retaining walls, an operations building, and a tunnel air circulation and control room. Additionally, the team will install track, an automatic train control system, traction power, voice and data communications systems, and all associated mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The rail extension will run above grade for about 600 meters (2,000 feet).

Preparatory work has begun and the new track section will be opened to traffic in 2005. The contract specifies that the line must be operational 1,075 days from receipt of the notice to proceed.

The project is being carried out in a consortium with The Lane Construction Corporation (40 percent) and Granite Construction Co. (30 percent).

Slattery Skanska has performed a number of projects for WMATA since 1972, including new construction of both the L'Enfant Plaza Subway Station and Potomac River Bridge. The Friendship Heights Subway Station in Washington, D.C. was one of Skanska's first projects in the U.S. market in the 1970s. More info at www.largotowncenter.com
