The Virginia ESGR is sponsored by the Department of Defense, and its awards are given annually to honor select employers that make it easier for employees to serve part-time in the National Guard and Reserve Components of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

Northrop Grumman Newport News was selected to receive this award from more than 600 entries submitted throughout Virginia. Billy K. Beebe, a Newport News sector employee and National Guardsman, submitted information to the ESGR citing the company for its support of reservists by extending military pay differential and insurance for a full year. In his letter, Beebe wrote, "This company deserves an award for coming up with additional benefits to support the guardsmen and reservists. They have gone above and beyond legal requirements for employer support."

John Shephard, senior vice president of Operations for Newport News, accepted the award on behalf of the company at an awards banquet held at Fort Lee, Va. "We are very proud of our employees who are guardsmen and reservists. They're serving our country in two ways, both as shipbuilders and when called up in uniform. We're glad to support them," said Shephard.

Northrop Grumman Newport News, headquartered in Newport News, Va., is the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two companies capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines. Newport News also provides after-market services for a wide array of naval and commercial vessels, and has the capability to design, build and maintain every class of ship in the U.S. Navy's fleet. The Newport News sector employs about 17,800 people.
