Mental Health Professionals "Changing Lives in Challenging Times"

HOUSTON, March 25, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Beal Counseling Associates presents the 7th Annual Conference on Counseling African-American Families and Multicultural Forum on April 13-16, 2004. This year's conference features Keynote Speaker, Dr. Alvin Poussaint, noted Harvard Professor, author, psychiatrist, educator, respected social critic and former consultant to The Cosby Show. The Conference theme is "Changing Lives In Challenging Times."

This three-and-a-half-day conference will be held at the beautiful South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center, 2500 South Shore Boulevard, League City, Texas. We are expecting over 350 participants this year, and have over 40 phenomenal speakers from across the United States presenting workshops. This conference will address the many concerns that plague the African-American family.

African-Americans represent a distinct cultural group, within which there is a tremendous amount of diversity. Given the heterogeneity of cultural characteristics that are present in African-American families, research suggests that there is no single definition to describe the "Black Family." Therefore, a major task for behavioral health practitioners is to apply therapeutic skills that demonstrate their ability to assess and treat different clients. This conference proposes model theories, interventions, therapeutic approaches, and case examples that may assist mental health providers in delivering services to African-American families and other families of color.

Psychologists, social workers counselors, case managers, caseworkers, probation officers, and other human service providers interested in developing or enhancing skills in assessment and psychotherapy from an Afrocentric perspective should attend. Additionally, all mental health providers, all substance abuse treatment providers and prevention providers, and all other professionals who provide services to African-American addicts and their families should attend this conference, which is intended to enhance their knowledge and skills. Additionally, 26 CEU hours can be earned attending conference workshops, including 3 hours of ethics (refer to full registration form at: www.bealcounseling.com).

Conference Founder, Janice M. Beal, Ed.D., is the Clinical Director of Beal Counseling Associates. She has recently served as an adjunct professor for the University of St. Thomas and Sam Houston State University. Currently she is working on postgraduate studies in public health at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
