StockPickReport Commentary -- March 27, 2006

Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) made a significant move up last week. My opinion was that GOOG would outperform the market. With Friday's $26 gain, GOOG proved to be a big winner and clearly bested the broader markets.

Here's a funny anecdote to my opinion of last week: A friend of mine asked, "Well, you know why Google moved up so strong on Friday, don't you?" My reply was, "I think I do, but what's your opinion?" My friend said, "Google is being added to the S&P 500, that's why."

To which I replied, "Really, I didn't know that."

But, wait, did I just say I didn't know that???

Yes, I did. You see, my belief is in the numbers, not the story. By "the numbers", I mean things like Stochastics, RSI, MACD, trend lines, moving averages, and so on. Technical analysis.

Okay, I actually did know about Google going into the S&P. That's been old news for a while. That Google would be added to the S&P was ordained the moment their stock began trading.

Yet, that fact did not stop the stock from sliding 28% down from their highs. That's the problem with "news". You see, the RUMORS of an S&P addition helped fuel GOOG's ascendancy. The "news" on Friday (read: confirmation of formerly-expected event) is what the technicals (Stochastics, RSI, trend line studies, etc.) alerted me to.

The old adage "buy the rumor, sell the news" is pretty good advice. I'd amend that, slightly, though. My axiom reads, "hear the rumor, check the technicals, buy if technical analysis supports it, and sell when technical analysis supports that, and don't wait for the news to sell because by then you are probably going to have missed some profits".

That's how you take advantage of "significant moves" like Google's last week. Watch my video to see more about my Google opinion. Find my video at http://www.donharrold.net/videos/google032606.html
