CDMA Continues to Dominate North American Wireless Landscape

Leadership in Subscriber Growth, AWS Deployments and Mobile Broadband Services Keep North American CDMA Operators At the Forefront

COSTA MESA, Calif., July 28, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that CDMA continues to be the dominant technology in North America -- with 140 million cdmaOne(tm) and CDMA2000(r) subscribers in the region. In North America, the CDMA market share is 51% and, as of March 2008, represents 31% of total CDMA subscribership worldwide. CDMA2000's 17% compound average growth rate (CAGR) is being driven by widespread adoption of 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) and advanced wireless broadband services.

"CDMA2000's continued growth and success in North America affirms the technology's superior performance, utility and reliability," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "CDMA2000's industry-leading advanced mobile broadband services are becoming an indispensible part of people's lives and they'll continue to shape demand well into the future as the technology continues to be enhanced. The value of CDMA operators' core network assets and services will be further increased when they are among the first in the world to complement their 3G CDMA networks with wider-bandwidth OFDM-based solutions, such as LTE and Mobile WiMAX."

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A is experiencing tremendous success throughout North America, mirroring the widespread growth being seen worldwide in both developed and emerging markets. 42 operators have deployed Rev. A and another 34 are in the process of upgrading. In North America, 12 of 45 CDMA2000 operators have deployed Rev. A, while 10 operators are in the process of deploying. There are more than 53 million CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Release 0 (Rel. 0) and Rev. A subscribers in North America as of March 2008, a 74% increase year-over-year from 2007 which represents 54% of the 97 million worldwide EV-DO subscribers.

U.S. operators continue to report increases in data revenue from CDMA2000 networks. They have introduced several new technologies and services, including mobile TV, Push-to-X, megapixel photo and music downloads, 3D multiplayer gaming and other downloadable applications. The U.S. has become the most valuable market in terms of mobile data service revenue in 2008, accounting for $24.5 billion, surpassing Japan which accounted for $23.5 billion in 2007. Currently, KDDI, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless are among the top six carriers worldwide in terms of generating wireless data revenue. Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless are both reporting more than $11 in average data revenue per user (ARPU) or around 20% of their total revenue.

CDMA2000 Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) have just launched in the U.S. this year with Cricket and MetroPCS, while Canada is in the process of auctioning its AWS spectrum to incumbent and new operators. By leveraging the larger AWS (1,700 MHz uplink/2,100 MHz downlink) bandwidth allocation, North American CDMA2000 operators are well positioned to meet the increasing demand for high-performance networks and advanced broadband services.
