National Research Council Report on Electronic Medical Records Software Supported by SRSsoft

MONTVALE, NJ--(Marketwire - January 12, 2009) - SRSsoft, the leader in hybrid EMR solutions and a long-time advocate for an alternative to traditional, counterproductive EMR products, today announced its support for the January 9, 2009 report by The National Research Council (NRC) on the impact of electronic medical records in clinical settings (click here for full report).

The landmark study was produced by a committee of industry thought leaders from many of the most respected organizations in the world, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, Google, and Intel. Committee members shadowed clinicians using traditional electronic medical records software at nationally recognized centers of medical care.

Their report discovered the following deficiencies with electronic medical record implementations:

-- Implementation timelines are long and actual implementation for
enterprise-wide functionality commonly exceed a decade
-- The systems result in rigid workflow in an era of rapid change
-- Charting is inefficient and inaccurate
-- Clinicians waste time retrieving information in the form they want to
    use
-- The systems cause inefficient workflow, incomplete or inaccurate data
    entry and misinterpretation of information
-- Clinicians spend more time entering data than using data
-- Benefits are significantly less than anticipated
-- Meaningful interoperability is almost non-existent
-- Support for evidence-based medicine and computer-based advice is rare
-- The systems are unsafe

"This remarkable and insightful landmark study clearly confirms that traditional electronic medical records software is not the solution to solve the problems that beset the healthcare industry," says Evan Steele, CEO of SRSsoft. "There is a perfect storm on the horizon. The vast numbers of our aging population combined with the insufficient number of doctors emerging from medical school is creating a potentially dangerous shortfall in the US healthcare system. Adding to this ominous trend are over-engineered systems that make physicians less productive and less able to meet the increased demand for care. Our approach in designing a hybrid EMR was to circumvent all these shortcomings and provide a system that is physician-friendly, highly productive and achieves the benefits in the original vision for EMR. Software vendors must focus on intuitive, easy-to-use solutions that make physicians and their staff digitally efficient, enabling them to provide top-notch patient care to an ever increasing number of patients."
