LINKS Honor Danialle Karmanos for Innovation in Wellness

Founder of Danialle Karmanos' Work It Out Delivers Yoga-Based Programming to Help Kids Make Healthy Choices

DETROIT, March 18, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Danialle Karmanos' Work It Out announced today that founder Danialle Karmanos will be honored March 27 by the Greater Wayne County Chapter of the LINKS, Inc., as LINKS launches a year-long health-awareness campaign.

Karmanos will receive the honor for innovation in wellness at the Pink Ball, a black-tie fundraiser that will benefit breast cancer treatment and programs of the LINKS' foundation. Also being honored will be Dr. James Blessman, Medical Director of the city of Detroit and author of the "12 Steps to Better Health and a Better Community."

Danialle Karmanos' Work It Out--DKWIO--is the 501 (c)(3) program that for five years has promoted a yoga-based approach to preventing among at-risk children obesity that can lead to preventable cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

"I am honored to be recognized by LINKS and very happy that LINKS is kicking off a campaign for good health," Karmanos said. "DKWIO was designed to equip kids with the tools to make healthy choices, and we're in the midst of a maddening epidemic that is not only affecting the lives of children, but will certainly cost us down the road."

The LINKS' health-awareness campaign--"Healthy Women … Empowered Communities"--will focus on increasing wellness and disease prevention in Detroit through programming, education and policy changes. Some of the profits from the Pink Ball will go to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's breast and cervical cancer control program.

The LINKS, Inc. is a non-profit corporation composed of 12,000 professional women of color in 270 chapters in the United States and Bahamas. This summer, the international LINKS organization will hold its convention in Detroit from June 30 to July 4.

The Pink Ball will be held on Saturday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Compuware building downtown. For ticket and donation information for the Pink Ball, contact Karen Heidelberg Barnwell at jbarnkh@comcast.net or by calling 313-864-3766.
