Fattest City in America Launches Campaign to Lose 50,000 Pounds

Fitness & Nutrition Guru, Tosca Reno, and Leading Weight Loss Surgeon, Nilesh Patel, Team Up to Galvanize Health Awareness in Corpus Christi, TX

DON MILLS, ONTARIO, Oct. 21, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- "Journey to Health" takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, at Corpus Christi Christian Fellowship, 6602 South Staples, Corpus Christi, TX.

Tosca Reno, magazine columnist, fitness model, and author of the New York Times bestselling book, YOUR BEST BODY NOW: Look and Feel Fabulous at Any Age the Eat-Clean Way (Harlequin; October 2010) will visit Corpus Christi, Texas, to take part in the city's "Journey to Health" campaign on November 6. Corpus Christi was named "America's Fattest City" by Men's Health magazine, which ranks cities by the percentage of people who are overweight, the percentage with type 2 diabetes, and other factors. Corpus Christi topped the list, and was one of eight cities in the United States to earn a grade of F. This news led Corpus Christi's mayor and community leaders to spearhead this campaign to change their F to a passing grade.

Corpus Christi resident Laurie Hairston, an Eat-Clean Diet success story, invited Tosca Reno, creator of the Eat-Clean Diet® to headline the day's event, where she will team with Dr. Nilesh Patel, members of Mayor Adame's Fitness Council, Gold's Gym trainers, and Harlequin, publisher of Reno's new book, to motivate and educate the city's leaders and residents about their health. "I could think of only one person up for this task, and that's Tosca Reno. She was instrumental in changing my lifestyle and is the right person to help my city," said Hairston. "Journey to Health" events will kick off with Mayor Adame;  a 5k Walk for Obesity; Boot-camp-style activities; Zumba, Body combat, and Power Pilates; a U.S. Army climbing wall; and an array of health screenings. Tosca Reno will take part in training demonstrations, as well as lead a nutrition seminar with Dr. Patel.

As part of her commitment to Corpus Christi, Reno has volunteered to work personally with a selected group of local residents who are in desperate need of nutrition, health and fitness counseling. She will create individualized plans for each person and keep them motivated for 12 weeks with weekly progress check-in video chats. "I've seen my health go from F to an A+ through simple lifestyle changes—I can't wait to help Corpus Christi do the same," Reno has said of accepting the invitation.

Before visiting Corpus Christi, Tosca Reno will be making stops in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio—all rated in the top ten of "America's Fattest Cities."
