TYZX Receives Notice of Allowance for Patent for Use of Stereo Vision for Gesture Control

New Patent Expands TYZX's Already Extensive Patent Portfolio, Also Applies to Traffic Monitoring and Physical Security

MENLO PARK, CA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2011) - TYZX, the 3D vision technology company, today announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for TYZX's claims for the use of real-time stereo in applications such as "recognizing a hand gesture in order to control an application by tracking a location and an orientation of a user's hand." This invention, whose title is "Generation of a Disparity Result with Low Latency," also addresses applications in traffic monitoring and safety.

This patent addresses the use of real-time stereo vision cameras to use hand gestures instead of remotes to control consumer devices such as televisions and mobile platforms. Consumers could channel surf and pause their video playback or game on TYZX-enabled televisions, smartphones, and other devices with simple hand motions, rather than by pushing buttons. Once integrated into televisions and other devices such as mobile phones, the stereo cameras could be used in additional applications, such as content capture and encoding for 3D TV and 3D video-conferencing.

"The advantages of 3D vision over 2D camera systems for applications such as gesture control and traffic monitoring are well established," said Ron Buck, President and CEO of TYZX. "Stereo vision delivers more robust results, even under outdoor or variable lighting conditions. In addition, stereo vision can be used to support cutting-edge applications such as 3D video.

"The small hardware footprint and high performance of the TYZX low-latency, parallel method for real-time stereo vision make it ideally suited for mobile platforms such as smart phones and tablets," Buck added.

The new patent also allows TYZX's claims for applications such as:

  • alerting a person entering a controlled zone to a danger or redirecting hazardous activity around the person

  • detecting the position of one or more vehicles and/or one or more pedestrians for a traffic monitoring application

This patent broadens the company's already extensive patent portfolio, which includes 10 other U.S. patents. A list of the company's U.S. patents is available here: http://www.tyzx.com/technology/patents.html.

TYZX applies its patents in its line of real-time 3D vision systems, including the TYZX DeepSea G3 Embedded Vision Systems (EVS). To learn more about the TYZX G3 EVS, please visit: http://www.tyzx.com/products/DeepSeaG3.html.
