U.S. State Department and Global Kids Select New York City Public School Students for Unique International Education Opportunity

Students at NYC's High School for Global Citizenship Learn in Kenya About Global Leadership

NEW YORK, Aug. 25, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Students at New York City's High School for Global Citizenship (www.hs-gc.org) will have a lot of new experiences to share in class this fall. The U.S. State Department and Global Kids (www.globalkids.org), the premier non-profit educational organization for global learning and youth development, selected 10 of them to take part in a global leadership program that included a four week service-learning trip to Kenya.

The sophomores and juniors are part of an 18-month experience. They will learn global leadership skills, receive science and technology training, conduct social entrepreneurship ventures, and participate in career readiness training.

Right now the students are studying abroad in Kenya as Bardoli Global Scholars. While on the trip, they are learning about Kenyan culture, working with young Kenyan leaders to introduce technology to their communities, and representing the United States as 2011 American Youth Leadership Program participants.

The National Center for Global Engagement is the lead partner and created the Bardoli Global Scholars Program. Ten additional students from One World Now are also participating.

The program is set up to allow Kenyan and American youth to work together to lead training sessions that build technical competencies, such as blogging, making videos, using social networks, and podcasting. These will serve as the activist tools through which social injustices that the two groups of young people identify are addressed. They will also explore how science and technology are used to deal with social justice and community issues.
