World-Record Gas Turbine Arrives in the U.S. Market

New York, NY, Oct. 19, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The next generation of gas turbines has arrived in the U.S. Florida Power & Light (FPL) has contracted Siemens Energy to supply six world-record SGT6-8000H gas turbine generator packages for the modernization of the Cape Canaveral Next Generation and Rivera Beach Clean Energy Centers in Florida. The first of these next-generation turbines was manufactured in Germany and recently traveled to the U.S. by ship over the course of eight weeks. The modernized plants will return to service in 2013 and 2014. In the near future, these turbines will be manufactured in the U.S. in Siemens’ newly expanded production facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The design of the new turbine was driven by the need to reduce emissions and preserve the environment for future generations. It will reduce natural gas consumption at power plants, cutting emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by more than 50 percent in the process compared to other turbines.

The delivery of this new turbine signifies the beginning of a new era of clean energy in the U.S. More and more customers are making long-term decisions to replace older technology with newer, more efficient gas turbines. How will this project fit into the national energy plan and what does it mean for the future of clean energy?
