10 Years After Hosting the Olympics, Salt Lake is Transformed Into a World Class Destination

A Dynamic New Downtown is at the Heart of a Great Western City

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A decade after Salt Lake City hosted the Olympic Winter Games of 2002, the city has been transformed. Visitors who were introduced to Salt Lake during the Games will find an exciting city that has become one of the major metropolitan centers of the West.

The Olympics proved to be the cornerstone for more than $2 billion in development in Salt Lake. That includes the TRAX light rail, which will soon link the international airport to the city, as well as City Creek Center, a 23-acre redevelopment in the heart of downtown opening in March. Salt Lake is now home to five-star hotel properties such as Grand America and Hotel Monaco. It has experienced a culinary Renaissance at restaurants like Copper Onion and Forage, and benefited from liberalized liquor laws. During the Olympics, the world was introduced to Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude, four great mountains that make Salt Lake the world's most dynamic ski town.

"Hosting the Games elevated our entire community to a world stage where we excelled beyond almost everyone's expectations," says Scott Beck, president and CEO of Visit Salt Lake. "This legacy has allowed Salt Lake to become a world-class destination."
