The United States, which has less than 5% of the world’s population, is responsible for taking about 80% of the world’s supply of prescription opioids (Manchikanti & Singh, 2008). Over a 10 year period from 1992 to 2012, opioid prescriptions increased by 170 million, going from 112 million to 182 million.
It is not uncommon for a doctor to write a patient a post-surgery pain medication prescription for 90 days. What often happens is that the patient takes the meds for 3-7 days and then switches to an over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol. There are regulations being put in place that will limit the number of days a prescription can be written for, usually 7 will be the maximum allowed. A growing number of states are also implementing a drug prescription database so that doctors can look up a patient and see what other prescriptions have been written so far. There are task forces being formed to target opioid manufacturers and distributors.
The free form of unlimited pain medication prescriptions are finally being regulated so that many potential addictions can be cut off before they start. Opioid manufacturers, distributors and doctors are starting to be held accountable to follow rules and laws that will hopefully start to curb this crisis killing our nation. When there is an average of 115 deaths a day due to opioid overdose, it is time to make as many changes as possible until this epidemic is safely under control.
