In Summer, Vehicles Present Potentially Deadly Scenarios

Attorney Jeff Green warns parents that higher temperatures present special risks for children during summer months.

Peoria, IL, June 28, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PEORIA, Ill. - The return of warmer weather means many people become more active and more drivers are on our roads. But summer presents unique dangers that parents should keep in mind to avoid catastrophe.

Peoria attorney Jeff Green said dangers range from overheated car interiors to a rise in the number of fatal crashes involving teen drivers, both of which increase in the summer.

“It’s very important that parents pick the right car seat for their children,” Green said. “In some cases, car seats have been recalled because of safety-related defects.”

Green suggests that parents visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s websiteto see if the child seat has been recalled.

Warm weather also means cars get hot very quickly. Children and pets are extremely susceptible to overheating in vehicles. Fatally high temperatures inside a vehicle can occur in a matter of mere minutes, even when the temperatures outside are not soaring. Dozens of children die every year in these incidences, and it can happen to anyone -- even the most careful and caring parents, Green said.

“Take extra safety precautions, such as putting a stuffed animal on the passenger seat whenever there is a child in a car seat in the back or putting a personal item in back with the child or children, such as a shoe or purse,” Green said. "This will act as a reminder to you to check the back seat before leaving the vehicle."

Summer is also inclusive of the “100 Deadliest Days,” when newer, inexperienced teenaged drivers are much more likely to be involved in a deadly car accident. Distracted driving (from texting, eating, using the radio, engaging with passengers, or other distractions), driving at rates of excessive speed, and not using seat belts are the biggest causes of these incidents, which can result in extreme tragedy.

“Remind teenagers every time to obey the rules of the road, not to text and drive, and to buckle up every single time they get into a vehicle, whether they're the driver or a passenger,” said Green.

Green said that extra precautions and additional attention to these details are a must to ensure a safe and happy season.
