MIAMI, Dec. 9, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Awards ceremony was held yesterday during the CDMA Americas Congress at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Recognizing companies and individuals for their contributions to the wireless industry, the awards were presented by Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, and Oliver Valente, president of the CDG and vice president, technology development at Sprint.
"The CDMA community continues to lead in the deployment of 3G wireless services across the globe. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the key stakeholders who have helped in the successful development and launch of CDMA2000(r)," said LaForge. "The CDG congratulates this year's award recipients, and applauds their dedication to the advancement of 3G wireless technologies."
This year's 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Award recipients are:
-- Industry Leadership Award This award is given to the individual who has provided dynamic leadership in 3G CDMA industry activities, including contributions to standards development and the growth and evolution of CDMA. -- 2003 Award Recipient Richard Lynch of Verizon Wireless, for the important role he played at Verizon Wireless during the launch of both CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO services. -- International Leadership This award is given to companies that have contributed significantly to the expansion of 3G CDMA through system deployments. -- 2003 Award Recipients: China Unicom Limited, for its leading role in deploying CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO and its efforts toward expanding international roaming. VIVO, for being the first operator in Latin America to deploy CDMA2000 1X services. -- Service Innovation This award is given to the carrier that has leveraged the capabilities of 3G CDMA to introduce innovative and industry-leading services to the market. -- 2003 Award Recipient Verizon Wireless, for its implementation of open standard MMS and the successful deployment of 1xEV-DO services in San Diego and Washington, D.C. -- Subscriber Technology Innovation This award is given to the company that demonstrates forward thinking in terms of services supported and terminal design. Resulting products take advantage of the inherent benefits and latest technological developments of 3G CDMA, offering consumers state-of-the-art terminals in terms of both features and packaging. -- 2003 Award Recipient LG Electronics, for its innovative CDMA2000 devices, including the VX6000, the first CDMA2000 handset with standardized MMS support and the SV130/KV1300 1xEV-DO models that offer one-hour video clip recording and 96 MB memory storage. -- Network Technology Innovation This award is given to the company that has introduced network capabilities that allow CDMA carriers flexible and cost-effective solutions for implementing advanced features and an easy solution path to further enhancements. -- 2003 Award Recipient Airvana, for its contributions to the development and deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO. -- Innovative Solutions This award is given to the company that has brought new ideas and different approaches to product deployment in their respective disciplines. Solutions provide value-added, cost-effective implementations for carriers supporting the advancement of CDMA into the market. -- 2003 Award Recipient QUALCOMM, for its contributions toward GSM1x and the development of innovative chipsets such as the MSM6100 that supports multimedia functionality including MP3 players, voice capture and advanced gaming. -- Innovative Applications This award is given to companies that have brought new ideas and different approaches to developing applications for 3G networks. Resulting applications provide carriers revenue-generating product offerings and attract customers with innovative services, whether for entertainment or information purposes. -- 2003 Award Recipients: KDDI for services such as eznavigation, a GPS location-based service that offers maps and real-time location information and ezmovie that allows users to view news, movie trailers and attach video clips. SK Telecom for their applications including June, which offers VOD, MOD, videophone, MMS and TV broadcasting and Moneta, a secure payment service.
The CDMA Development Group is a trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of CDMA technologies. The more than 100 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless carriers and equipment manufacturers.
