According to Bernard Schmitt, "On Wednesday, the commerce department stated that orders for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years, jumped 3.3 percent after falling by 5.3 percent in July. The American Bankers Association reported that the percentage of credit card payments that were past due shot up to a record high of 4.81 percent in the April-June quarter. A barrel of light crude was quoted at $66.35, up $1.28, on the New York Mercantile Exchange after reaching $67.40. Stocks closed mixed. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 16.88, or 0.16 percent, to 10,473.09. The Nasdaq composite index lost 1.02, or 0.05 percent, to 2,115.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 1.23, or 0.1 percent, to 1,216.89. The Russell 2000 index fell 3.13, or 0.47 percent, to 656.04."
