Harsco's Patent Division Awarded $3.5 Million Contract to Support Seattle Reservoir Project

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 10, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Worldwide industrial services company Harsco Corporation (NYSE:HSC) said today that its North America-based Patent Construction Systems division has received a major order expected to be worth as much as $3.5 million over the next 10-12 months to provide shoring equipment and related engineering and installation services on two reservoirs that are being covered over as part of Seattle's long-range underground reservoir plans. The award marks one of Patent's largest single shoring-related orders within the past several years. Shoring is used to support large concrete sections such as floors, walls, and other structures during construction.

To comply with water quality regulations and to enhance its water system security, Seattle plans to cover all of its drinking-water reservoirs over the next several years. Two reservoirs have already been covered with floating covers. Two additional reservoirs are now being converted to underground storage, and Patent's contract calls for extensive amounts of shoring to support the construction of their permanent concrete enclosures. The city plans to build new parks and open space over the covered reservoirs.

The contract specifies Patent's GASS aluminum shoring system due to its high load-carrying capacity for heavy cast-in-place concrete structures and for its ease in set-up and relocation. Patent will supply the shoring equipment on a rental basis and will also provide the labor to erect and move the shoring through each of the project's three stages of construction. Additional equipment will also be provided from Patent's broad range of shoring and forming products.

The construction is being managed by MidMountain Contractors, a Washington-based firm that has been a long-standing client of Patent and who selected Patent for its history of performance and its ability to provide the substantial amounts of equipment and labor necessary to successfully undertake and complete the project's extensive scope within the required timeframe. Follow-on bidding opportunities are expected as additional reservoirs are scheduled to be converted underground and permanently covered.

The Patent division is part of Harsco's $1.1 billion global Access Services business group, the world's foremost provider of rental scaffolding, formwork and other access-related services to the global non-residential construction, industrial plant maintenance, and energy markets.
