Officer Faced Two Choices: Use a Taser Device or Shoot Teen

Utica Police Officers Attacked by 15-year-old Armed With Two Knifes

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 15, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices (ECDs), released the following NEWS ALERT:

According to a report in the May 14, 2008 edition of The Observer-Dispatch from Utica, NY, police used a TASER(r) electronic control device to disarm an out-of-control 15-year-old teen that attacked officers with two knives Tuesday afternoon. The teen stopped taking his psychotropic medication Sunday, and by Tuesday he smashed a telephone over his head and knocked an air conditioner out of a window according to the article.

Capt. Mark Williams is quoted in the article as saying the officer had two choices. "He either used the TASER, or shot the kid. This was the first incident that showed how successfully TASERs can prevent officers from using deadly physical force," said Williams.

The city officers have been using TASER devices since October 2007. The complete story is available at: http://www.uticaod.com/homepage/x2118738373/Police-Taser-prevented-incident-from-escalating.
