Fibertech Networks Deploys Foundry Multi-Service Backbone Routers and Edge Switches to Support Next-Generation Network and Services

NetIron XMR Backbone Routers and FastIron Switches Selected to Meet Fibertech's Network Growth and Advanced IP Services and Features

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 29, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Foundry Networks(r), Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced that Fibertech Networks has deployed Foundry's(tm) NetIron(r) XMR MPLS multi-service backbone routers to power its wide area next-generation metropolitan network and the FastIron(r) family of Layer 2/3 switches for network access layer requirements. As a premier provider of metropolitan broadband access, Fibertech turned to Foundry to provide an inter-metro backbone routing and edge switching solution that would meet Fibertech's technical requirements, while allowing the service provider to meet the demanding and evolving service needs of its extensive client base.

Founded in 2000, Fibertech is one of the largest, independently owned metro-area fiber optic footprints and a leader in building and operating fiber optic networks. It has core networks throughout more than 21 metropolitan areas across 10 states, stretching from Indiana to New Hampshire. The company has experienced traffic growth that not only involves pure numerical bandwidth increases, but is also increasingly complex and varied. In order to provide high-quality network performance and to meet customer needs going forward, Fibertech turned to Foundry to provide its next-generation switches and routers that feature industry-leading performance, as well as significantly lower capital and operational expenditure advantages.

"As a premier metropolitan service provider, Fibertech absolutely requires the highest performance, reliability, scalability and flexibility when it comes to selecting the ideal infrastructure and networking solutions for our network," said Earl Ipsaro, vice president of Engineering for Fibertech. "Foundry delivered us backbone routers and edge switches that exceeded our intensive requirements at a compelling price for performance value and dramatically lower total cost of ownership."

The NetIron XMR multi-service backbone routers offer 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) density, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-capability, flexibility and manageability allowing Fibertech to provide scalability in terms of network growth and additional value-add services to customers. To complement the NetIron XMR routers, Fibertech installed the FastIron Edge, Edge X and LS families of high-performance Layer 2/3 switches at the network edge. The FastIron series of switches offered Fibertech a complimentary high-performance and cost-effective solution for its customer premises equipment (CPE) needs through hardware redundancy, an advanced feature set, and industry-leading wire-speed 10GbE density.

"Fibertech Networks' selection of Foundry's backbone routers and switches validates the importance of providing networking solutions with the features, scalability and performance for customer needs today and in the future," said Ken Cheng, vice president and general manager for Foundry's High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit. "Foundry's highly efficient NetIron routers have the greatest density in the industry, while providing next-generation features and services for metro service provider leaders like Fibertech. As its customers request next-generation capabilities for growing and increasingly varied traffic, it will be well-prepared to continue providing high-quality network performance."
