According to an article in the August 1, 2008 edition of Black Press B.C., the Langley Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was dispatched to the Langley Memorial Hospital Thursday night due to an emotionally disturbed 53-year-old patient threatening suicide. When the officers arrived to the scene, the woman already cut her arms and legs with a knife. Officers attempted to negotiate with the woman, but she ignored them and began cutting her throat. Officers deployed a TASER(r) Electronic Control Device and successfully detained the woman.
The article quotes Cpl. Peter Thiessen saying, "Up to that point, all the appropriate police options were exhausted and the TASER was deployed as the next viable option by the police to prevent the female from continuing any further harm to herself or those around her."
