AssistMed Selected by North Dakota Agency to Provide Electronic Medical Records System

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AssistMed, Inc. today announced it has been selected by The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to provide an agency-wide electronic medical records (EMR) system. Terms were not disclosed.

The system will provide healthcare professionals with state-of-the art capabilities, including prescription and pharmacy inventory tracking, the ability to monitor movements of inmates throughout the facilities, flexible bed assignment, and an EMR-integrated dental application. In addition, AssistMed's system offers speech recognition processing technology and auto-formatting and auto-correction of clinical documents.

"The selection of AssistMed's system follows an extensive evaluation of our technology and its features, including its Web-based applications and other capabilities that we demonstrated onsite to showcase the system's functionality -- as well as favorable feedback from existing users," said Leonardo Berezovsky, M.D., chairman and chief executive officer of AssistMed, Inc.

He highlighted several determining factors in the selection of AssistMed's Magnum EMR System by The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation: the need for a comprehensive solution that would serve both its inpatient and outpatient requirements; the ability to easily and effectively interface with the agency's existing administrative systems, while providing all the requisite functionality in an integrated system without requiring expensive interfaces to third-party vendors; and, the system's unique ability to provide integration with the agency's existing forms into the EMR system, for online access and use. "This latter capability was particularly important to the evaluators since it minimizes training for physicians and nurses, and it enables them to continue using the workflow already familiar to the healthcare professionals," Berezovsky said.

He noted that the agency recognized the tremendous value in AssistMed's unique speech recognition solution, which automatically produces fully formatted and highly accurate draft reports to enable the department's transcriptionists to dramatically improve productivity by editing these drafts rather than transcribing the reports from scratch. He added that the agency was interested in the future applications of the company's natural language processing technology, which extracts clinical facts from free text and converts them to codes, for important clinical and administrative purposes. "We anticipate the cost savings will be significant both in terms of time and financial resources, since the system will provide more-productive in-house technology capabilities and eliminate the need for expensive outsourcing support," Berezovsky added.
