BALTIMORE, Nov. 19, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Two Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) engineers were honored by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at the group's annual convention in Phoenix Nov. 12-16.

Yamaris Soto received a SHPE Technical Achievement Recognition (STAR) award in the Professional Role Model category. Mairim G. Ramos-Lebron was presented with a STAR award as a Promising Engineer. Both are employees of the company's Electronic Systems sector, which is based in Baltimore.

The Professional Role Model award recognizes SHPE members who have made significant contributions to a SHPE chapter and to the Hispanic community.
Soto is an energetic volunteer. She is a leader of the Baltimore chapter of SHPE, which she helped establish in 2004. Soto also has held several board positions and served as chapter president from 2007-2008. The chapter helps support the Hispanic engineering community and Baltimore-area SHPE student chapters that encourage youth to pursue careers in science and engineering.
Soto joined Northrop Grumman in 2003 as part of the company's professional development program and completed rotational assignments in the Antenna Systems, Power Systems, and Systems Supportability Engineering groups. She currently works as a Senior Multi Discipline Engineer, responsible for providing assessments of and recommendations on the reliability of radar systems. Soto earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus.
The Promising Engineer award honors an engineer with fewer than three years of work experience who has been recognized by his or her colleagues for outstanding technical accomplishments.
Ramos-Lebron earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. She came to Northrop Grumman in 2006 under the professional development program and completed rotational assignments with the Digital Systems, Software Engineering, and Systems Engineering organizations. She later became the lead systems engineer for an internal research and development program in the Undersea Systems business unit. She is currently a systems engineer working on product enhancements in addition to other programs.
In addition to community work, she is serving this year as president of the Baltimore SHPE chapter.
