WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - December 8, 2008) - Building on its strong presence in
Washington, D.C., and further broadening its energy practice, King &
Spalding announced today the addition of three energy lawyers whose
practices span energy, regulatory, transactional and litigation matters,
including extensive experience before the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission (FERC) and coverage of federal and state regulatory issues in
all major U.S. power markets.
Joining the firm's Washington, D.C., office as partners are Neil L. Levy,
David G. Tewksbury and Bruce L. Richardson. Levy will serve as co-chair,
along with Philip R. Weems, of the firm's global energy practice.
The addition of these three lawyers strengthens the Washington component of
King & Spalding's energy practice, which stretches from offices in Dubai
and Abu Dhabi to Houston, and is recognized as one of the top practices in
North America, Latin America and the Middle East by Chambers Global 2008.
This move comes on the heels of another significant Washington recruiting
action by King & Spalding -- the return to the firm less than three weeks
ago of Paul Clement, the 43rd Solicitor General of the United States, to
establish an expanded national appellate practice.
"We are pleased to welcome Neil, David and Bruce to the firm," said J.
Sedwick (Wick) Sollers, managing partner of King & Spalding's Washington,
D.C., office. "King & Spalding is committed to building on our strengths in
the energy sector. In particular, we have built a strong reputation
representing developers, operators and lenders in regulated gas, power and
alternative energy projects. The skills, experience and leadership
capabilities of Neil and his colleagues fit well with that practice and
give us an opportunity to expand it."
The three lawyers join King & Spalding from Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where
they were partners and Levy was also co-chair of the energy practice.
Levy said, "I am pleased to join King & Spalding's energy team and work
with distinguished colleagues like Wick and Paul. King & Spalding has
demonstrated a compelling strategic vision for the energy practice and
Washington, D.C., is central to that vision. I look forward to taking an
active leadership role in executing the firm's commitment to the practice."
Levy represents independent power producers, electric power and natural gas
marketers, interstate pipelines and local distribution companies before
FERC, state public utility commissions and the courts of appeal with
respect to all regulatory, administrative litigation and transactional
issues arising under the Federal Power Act, the Natural Gas Act, the Public
Utility Holding Company Act of 2005, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the
Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978. Levy also represents
clients in mergers and acquisitions transactions in the energy sector.
Chambers USA 2008 selected Levy as one of America's leading lawyers for
business in the energy/electricity sector. He received a J.D. degree from
Ohio Northern University Law School and a B.A. degree, with special honors,
from George Washington University.
Tewksbury represents and advises independent power producers, electric
power marketers, natural gas and oil pipelines and other companies in
connection with a wide range of transactional and regulatory matters.
Transactional matters include electric power and natural gas supply
contracts, interconnection agreements, pipeline leases, mergers and
acquisitions and bankruptcy restructurings. Regulatory matters include
issues arising under various federal and state laws, such as the Federal
Power Act, the Natural Gas Act, the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act
of 1978, the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 2005 and the Energy
Policy Act of 2005. Tewksbury received a J.D. degree from Washington and
Lee University School of Law, magna cum laude, and a B.A. degree from
Williams College.
Richardson represents and advises independent power producers, electric
power marketers, energy asset managers, private equity firms involved in
the energy sector and generation-owning industrial companies in connection
with a broad array of transactional issues, administrative litigation,
regulatory matters and project issues. Transactional matters include
electric power contracts, interconnection arrangements and mergers and
acquisitions. Regulatory matters include issues arising under the Federal
Power Act, the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978, the Public
Utility Holding Company Act of 2005 and the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Richardson received a J.D. degree, with honors, from George Washington
University Law School and a B.A. degree from the University of Chicago.
King & Spalding's energy practice advises clients on a broad spectrum of
transactional, litigation and arbitration matters in the oil and gas, power
and mining industries. Because of the international and interdisciplinary
nature of the practice, the lawyers who comprise the group are resident in
the majority of the firm's offices and nearly all its practice groups,
giving King & Spalding one of the broadest and deepest benches of energy
lawyers. King & Spalding understands the industry's requirements for
efficient, practical advice, and values building long-term client
relationships based on performance and trust. The firm's energy practice
has received international acclaim for its representation of clients across
a wide range of energy transactions and disputes.
