CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - September 2, 2009) - Spectrem Group announced today that its
Spectrem Millionaire Investor Index (SMII)® rose 6 points in August to
-10, improving to a neutral level for only the second time this year.
The advance, which follows a 4-point gain in July, brings the millionaire
index into neutral territory, from mildly bearish, for the first time since
May 2009. Prior to that, it was last neutral in August 2008.
Meanwhile, the Spectrem Affluent Investor Index (SAII)®, which measures
the investment outlook of households with $500,000 or more in investable
assets, rose 1 point to -18, a mildly bearish reading.
"Millionaires grew more optimistic about the investment environment in
August, improving to a neutral stance for just the second time this year.
However, the broader affluent population remained mildly bearish, with both
groups highly focused on health care reform. It seems clear that the
nation's wealthiest investors remain cautious, amid uncertainty on multiple
fronts, as we move out of summer and into the fall," said George H. Walper,
Jr., President of Spectrem Group.
In response to an open-ended question about the news story most affecting
their economic outlook, affluent investors in August cited: health care
reform (40%); the economy (11%); the political environment (10%); stock
market conditions (6%); housing and real estate (5%); and increasing oil
and gas prices (1%). August 2009 was the first month the response "health
care reform" was tracked.
Millionaires were slightly less concerned about health care reform (38%)
and the economy (10%) in August than the affluent.
