TIE Technologies Announces Award of Smart Levee Project

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TIE Technologies, Inc. (Pink Sheets:TTCS) today announces its participation in the Intelligent Flood Protection Monitoring, Warning and Response System (IFPRMWRS) DNR RSIQ No. 2503-09-21 project awarded by the State of Louisiana to Geocomp and their 'I-Levee Team' associates.

TIE Technologies, as a named sub contractor under Geocomp in the I-Levee Team, will be leading the smart communications portion of the project. Designing and developing a 'smart' communications system, which is independent, reliable and redundant is a critical component of insuring that the data from the sensor networks on the Mississippi Levee provide actionable intelligence to the entire Emergency Responder team.

The State of Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration (OCRP) is planning to deploy a state of the art Intelligent Flood Protection Monitoring, Warning and Response System (IFPRMWRS) at strategic locations within Mississippi River flood control systems under its responsibility. This system will include the ability to monitor and warn of system failure that could lead to catastrophic consequences.

In this collaborative effort led by Geocomp Corporation, a national leader in the development and deployment of web-based, real-time monitoring systems to reduce risk for civil works, TIE Technologies will be assembling technology resources with the support of Architron Systems, Inc., leaders in providing integrated environmentally hardened communications solutions for critical services and emergency preparedness applications, and the Aerospace Corporation, the research and development center (FFRDC) for the United States Air Force.

Other members of Geocomp's project 'I-team' include; Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) a full service consulting firm that provides planning, engineering, construction management and program management for major infrastructure projects worldwide; Shannon and Wilson, who provides innovative geosciences expertise in the areas of foundations, instrumentation, slope stability, seismicity, railroad support services, and tunneling; James Lee Witt Associates, renowned subject matter experts in emergency planning and crisis management; National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute (NIMSAT) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, whose strategic focus include resource and information management, critical infrastructure and key resources (CIKR) analysis, and geospatial decision support and; SMARTEC, experts in civil and geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, oil and gas industry and energy distribution

The Intelligent Flood Protection Monitoring, Warning and Response System (IFPRMWRS) will collect critical 'levee status data' from monitoring sensors installed throughout the flood control system. The project will also collect a combination of geo-referenced voice, web-based, and photographic input. A centralized data center will process all input in real time, and will provide interactive real time displays of the health and status of the flood control system using a geographic information system (GIS). If any input data exceeds pre-defined thresholds, exception based notices or alerts will be issued. The levee monitoring system will be housed at the NIMSAT Institute, on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus during the two-year development and test phase of this project.

Mark Marangella, TIE Technologies' Executive Vice President commented, "Since the events of Hurricane Katrina, building a smart logistical solution, which can help provide the communications infrastructure necessary to prevent the unnecessary loss of life and property, has been an active concern at TIE Technologies. The opportunity to participate in such an important pilot project with the State of Louisiana, Geocomp and the other strong I-Levee team partners, is truly exciting. Beyond the scope of this pilot project is the challenge awaiting the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to address the requirement for providing a smart solution at a national level. This represents a very significant business opportunity that TIE Technologies and their I-Levee associates will be well prepared to address, following their completion of the pilot project."
