PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - January 7, 2010) - The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology
Organization (IEEE-ISTO), the premier trusted partner of the global
technology community for the development, adoption, and certification of
industry standards, announced today that the Wireless Power Consortium
(WPC) has recently joined its federation of member programs.
The Wireless Power Consortium's mission is to create and promote wide
market adoption of Qi, the international wireless power standard for
interoperability across rechargeable electronic devices. Compatible
products will be recognized by the Qi logo and will include, but not be
limited to, phones, cameras, and remote controls. All electronics carrying
the Qi logo will work with charging stations also bearing the logo.
Membership in the organization is open to any company. Currently, more
than twenty five companies comprise the consortium.
"The member companies of the wireless power consortium want to focus on
delivering the technical specification and on promoting the Qi standard,"
said Menno Treffers, chairman of the Wireless Power Consortium. "The
administrative services and infrastructure provided by IEEE-ISTO reduce the
administrative burden for the member companies and help us achieve our goal
quickly and efficiently."
IEEE-ISTO was formed in 1999 and is affiliated with IEEE and IEEE Standards
Association. Since its inception, IEEE-ISTO has supported over thirty
diverse, leading technical programs. Wireless Power Consortium was the
second publicly announced group to join IEEE-ISTO's Federation during 2009,
with TagVault.org announcing formation in July.
"The idea of wireless charging has only recently begun to enter the general
public's consciousness," said Peter Lefkin, IEEE-ISTO Marketing and
Business Development Executive. "We are excited to be partnering with the
Wireless Power Consortium as they develop this new, exciting technology."
