Telvent to Implement Global Management System for Bay of Cadiz Metropolitan Light Rail

Start-up of the First Light Rail Line Will Enhance Intermodality and Improve Connections in the Bay of Cadiz

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 5, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Telvent (Nasdaq:TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that it will implement the Telvent SmartMobilityTM Light Rail Solution for the new metropolitan light rail system in Spain's Bay of Cadiz. The new light rail system, which will have a total of 22 stations along its 24-kilometer route, is expected to go operational by 2011. The contract is valued at over 18 million Euros.

One of the most innovative aspects of the new light rail system is its having been conceived as a mixed transportation system, enabling convoys to move freely through the light rail and regional train networks. This unique feature, implemented with tremendous success in countries including Germany and Holland, yields higher light rail frequency and enhances intermodality among the different means of transportation.

The system to be installed by Telvent is based on the company's proprietary supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA), and will centralize global management of the signaling, communications and security systems, as well as the traveler information system. Thanks to the Telvent SmartMobilityTM Light Rail Solution, operators in charge of system management will be able to adapt the transportation offering to network demands in real time, while improving safety and security at the same time.

The contract encompasses implementation and integration of the operational assistance systems; automatic ticketing systems based on contact-less technology; traveler information system; closed-circuit television surveillance (CCTV); intercom system; light rail signaling and the communications network.

Manuel Sánchez, Telvent's chairman, stated, "We are pleased to work together with the Regional Government of Andalusia in its commitment to develop sustainable transportation networks that contribute to greenhouse gas emission reductions and bring solid improvements to mobility in Andalusia."

Telvent, with its broad expertise and experience in railway management systems, stands out in the worldwide market as the leading technology provider of smart transportation systems. The company has participated with great success in other light rail management projects, including Madrid Light Rail, Barcelona's Trambaix y Trambessos, Mexico City's Light Rail and is currently working on Morocco for Rabat's new light rail system.
