Funambol Introduces World's First Commercial Open Source Mobile Device Management for 4G WiMAX

Provides WiMAX Operators and Device Makers With Low-Cost End-to-End Solution for Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) Updates, Bootstrap, Provisioning, Troubleshooting and Lock-and-Wipe

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - July 28, 2010) -  Funambol, the open source mobile cloud sync company, today announced the availability of Funambol DM Carrier Edition, the world's first commercial open source device management solution for WiMAX. Developed with Clearwire, the WiMAX leader, the solution makes it faster, easier and cheaper to wirelessly manage WiMAX devices. Funambol DM Carrier Edition implements the OMA DM 1.2 standard and automates bootstrap, configuration, setup, provisioning, monitoring, Firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates, lock-down and erase, and reporting.

Funambol DM Carrier Edition implements Device Reported Measurements and Diagnostics (DRMD), the new standard for WiMAX diagnostics and reporting, and is based on open source, for full customizability. The solution can be deployed on-premises or hosted in the cloud by Funambol for customers.

"4G WiMAX offers much faster wireless broadband," said Fabrizio Capobianco, Funambol CEO. "Device management is required to enable WiMAX devices to sustain high performance. Our solution provides 4G mobile operators and device manufacturers with the ability to perform a full range of device management tasks, everything from set-up and provisioning, to diagnostics and updates. The system is scalable, flexible and can be fully customized. Customer support, network and operational functions will become much more cost-effective as a result of implementation."

Millions of data-centric devices are proliferating on WiMAX networks, such as WiFi routers, 4G dongles and smartphones. Their complexity makes them more challenging than voice-centric devices. WiMAX operators and device makers are looking to automate FOTA updates and other device management functions to increase quality of service (QoS) and to reduce operational and support costs.

Funambol DM Carrier Edition is an end-to-end DM solution that consists of a server and a client for WiMAX devices today and LTE shortly. The server is built on the foundation of the open source Funambol DM Server that is optimized for 4G operational challenges in an all-IP network. The client supports multiple network profiles (roaming) and DRMD diagnostics for network QoS support.

Funambol DM Carrier Edition is available immediately. For more information, download the Funambol DM data sheet (www.funambol.com/solutions/library.php) or contact a Funambol sales representative (www.funambol.com).
